Cuero Regional Hospital’s cardiopulmonary rehab program combines cardiac and pulmonary rehab services under one roof. It is overseen by cardiologist William Craig, MD, Medical Director of the program. The rehab program can improve your quality of life if, for instance, you’ve: + Had a heart attack or heart surgery + Experienced angina (chest pain) + Been diagnosed with COPD or asthma. During rehab, you’ll take part in exercises designed to gradually increase your strength and stamina. Trained staff will monitor your safety, says Jennifer Janssen, RN, BSN, ICU/ PACU/Day Surgery/Cardiopulmonary Rehab Director. Most people attend one-hour rehab sessions three times per week. Education is another component. You’ll learn self-care steps that may reduce hospital stays. “We want you to regain your strength, prevent your condition from worsening and reduce the risk of any future heart problems,” Janssen says. In addition, pulmonary participants learn breathing techniques. Along with exercise training, this can reduce shortness of breath and the need for oxygen therapy, says Brenda Martin, RT, Cardiopulmonary Director. Cardiopulmonary rehab is currently enrolling patients. Safety is a priority in light of COVID-19. “We’re taking all of the proper precautions to keep our patients safe,” Martin says. Cardiopulmonary rehab enrollment is by physician referral. And it’s covered by most insurances. Ask your doctor if it’s right for you. And that’s the goal at Cuero Regional Hospital’s (CRH) Childbirth Center. Last year, 140 babies were born at CRH. Here are a few reasons to welcome your little one here: Private suites. The Childbirth Center features five state-of-the-art birthing suites. This means you can have your baby and recover in the same room. Your comfortable suite will include a private bath and shower, plus a mini fridge and other amenities to make you feel at home. Experienced, caring nurses. Throughout your stay, certified and highly trained nurses will care for you. As part of their commitment to moms and babies, they continually receive ongoing training to keep pace with the latest in maternity care, says Wilma Reedy, RNC, Childbirth Center Director. Some of the nurses have been here more than 20 years; Reedy herself began her career at Cuero in 1982. “Our nurses love what they do,” she says. And they can spend more time providing personalized care for you. Birthing options to suit your needs. Epidurals are available, as are natural labor pain management techniques, from labor balls to special positioning. Cesarean sections are available as needed. Babies room in. You and your support person can spend as much time as you want bonding with baby, which has many benefits, such as improved breastfeeding. If you have questions about breastfeeding or anything else, the nurses will help you adjust to your new little one before you go home. “We’ll be there for you and your baby,” Reedy says.
