Cuero Regional Hospital now offers 3-D mammograms As of June 4, Cuero Regional Hospital offers 3-D mammography to its patients. With the new Genius™ 3D Mammography™ exam at Cuero Regional Hospital, patients receive the most accurate mammogram available in our area. This exam revolutionizes how breast cancer is detected by providing a better option for women of all breast densities, compared to 2-D alone. “We are proud to offer the latest in breast cancer screening technology right here at home for our patients,” says Tyler Lemke, RT (R), CT, MR, Director of Radiology at Cuero Regional Hospital. “Genius™ exams are clinically proven to significantly increase the detection of breast cancers, and also decrease the number of women asked to return for additional testing. “The Genius™ 3D Mammography™ exam allows doctors to examine your breast tissue layer by layer. So instead of viewing all of the complexities of your breast tissue in a flat image, as with conventional 2-D mammography, fine details are more visible and no longer hidden by the tissue above or below.” Reasons to get screened One in eight women will develop breast cancer in her lifetime. Eight out of nine women diagnosed with breast cancer have no family history. But, with early detection, the five-year survival rate is almost 100%. More than 200 clinical studies have shown that by using this technology, doctors are able to screen for breast cancer with greater accuracy—which means better breast cancer detection and a reduced chance of being called back for additional screenings. Researchers have found that: + The Genius™ 3D Mammography™ exam finds 20% to 65% more invasive breast cancers compared to 2-D alone, an average increase of 41%. + Only the Genius™ 3D Mammography™ exam is FDA approved as superior for women with dense breasts compared to 2-D alone. + The Genius™ 3D Mammography™ exam reduces callbacks by up to 40% compared to 2-D alone. “Cuero Regional Hospital is committed to the fight against breast cancer,” says Lemke. “In offering the Genius™ exam, we are able to provide a more accurate tool for breast cancer screening, which falls into line with our dedication to providing superior care to our patients close to home.” Many measures are being taken to keep patients and staff safe. Among them: Use of appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE). We began securing PPE as early as January, when the coronavirus outbreak was still just international news. Extensive COVID-19 training for caregivers and staff. Early on in the pandemic, we saw very few coronavirus hospitalizations. But by the end of June, CRH was caring for as many as a dozen coronavirus patients at a time. Increased cleaning and disinfection. In addition to stepped-up cleaning efforts, we purchased UV (ultraviolet) light disinfecting technology. Visitor restrictions and a universal mask policy. These are in effect throughout CRH. Patient and staff symptom screenings. Separate entrances were created for staff and patients, and all patients entering the building undergo COVID-19 screenings, including temperature checks, at the hospital and clinics. Staff self-monitor daily. A newly created COVID-19 unit just for sick patients. Staff members converted part of the ICU into a negative pressure (isolation) unit and added two extra beds, with room for more, when needed. Traveling nurses were hired to help care for patients. Also, telemedicine technology has allowed remote pulmonary specialists to support doctors at CRH caring for COVID-19 patients.
