Cuero Regional Hopsital | Connect | Summer 2019

Safety is a TEAM effort During Patient Safety Week in March, Cuero Regional Hospital chose a theme that encourages health care employees and patients to share responsibility for safe outcomes: TEAM (Together Everyone Avoids Mistakes). The week included community discussions about patient safety and additional education for staff members. “We also reached out to our budding filmmakers and actors to make short films about patient safety,” says Denise McMahan, RN-MSN, Assistant Administrator of CRH and Hospital Safety Officer. It will be available—for the first time—close to home, when Cuero Regional Hospital installs its new SIGNA Pioneer 3T MRI scanner from GE Healthcare. The high-tech scanner “provides the most detailed imaging now in clinical use,” says Tyler Lemke, RT(R), CT, MR, director of radiology at Cuero. “Typically, a scanner this powerful is only available in major cities.” It will allow providers at Cuero to see abnormalities on a very small scale and better diagnose and treat conditions such as tumors, strokes, and musculoskeletal diseases or injuries. The new MRI machine also provides far faster scans—in fact, it cuts scanning time almost in half compared to traditional machines. “That helps us accommodate more people who need imaging,” Lemke says. “And it’s a better experience for patients.” The scanner is also designed for maximum comfort. Its large bore—the tube where patients are scanned—can help those who are claustrophobic feel less anxious, and it can accommodate people who weigh up to 550 pounds. And for area women, this may be the biggest benefit: Breast MRIs are now possible with the new scanner. If you need an MRI—for example, because you’re at high risk for breast cancer—you will be able to get it done at Cuero.
