LEADERSHIP CORNER Helping physicians perform at their best I’ve served as medical chief of Cuero Regional Hospital since 2017. We’ve assembled a wonderful group of primary care and specialty physicians capable of treating almost any ailment. Most rural hospitals function through primary care physicians providing care up to their next skill level, then transferring patients for specialized care. But we’re able to keep most patients close to home rather than sending them hours away, which isolates them from their families at a time when they need them the most. I suspect that many patients don’t know the level of our physicians’ experience and education. Most have completed fellowships and specialties in addition to the standard residency required for board certification. They also provide highly personal care so patients don’t feel like they’re being rushed out the door. My key goal for our staff is accountability. We should all be performing at our highest level. I’m a family physician with specialized training in obstetrics. I absolutely love delivering babies and caring for women during and after pregnancy. I get to be directly involved in seeing a family made and watching that family grow. As for my family, I rely heavily on my wife, Susan Mims, PA-C, a physician assistant at our Cuero Medical Clinic. We have three children, all boys. And despite working full time, Susan somehow accomplishes everything to keep our lives together.
